We Take Pride in Our GE Monogram Appliance Repair in Delray Beach
Delray Beach is a beautiful city located in Palm Beach County, Florida. In 2019, Delray Beach is expected to have a population of 69,451, up from 60,522 according to the 2010 US Census. Delray Beach is 52 miles north of Miami and is part of the Miami metro region, which had a population of 6,198,782 people in 2018.
On a military map from 1841, a Seminole camp may be seen in the area that is now known as Lake Ida. The United States Life Saving Service built the Orange Grove House of Refuge in 1876 to rescue and shelter shipwrecked sailors. The house got its name from a beautiful grove of mature sour orange and other tropical fruit trees that grew on the land allocated for the refuge, but no record or confirmation of who planted the trees was uncovered.
Republican Congressman William S. Linton of Saginaw, Michigan, bought land west of the renowned Orange Grove House of Refuge in 1894 and began selling plots in what he hoped would become an agricultural town. Originally, Linton was the name of the settlement. In 1896, Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad was expanded from West Palm Beach to Miami, with a stop in Linton.
A post office and a shop were erected by the well-known Linton settlers, and truck farming of winter vegetables for the northern market became a success. A severe winter in 1898 was a setback, and some settlers, including William Linton, were forced to abandon their houses. The settlement's name was changed to Delray in 1901, after the Detroit neighborhood of Delray (which is Spanish for "of the king"), which was named after the historic Battle of Molino del Rey during the Mexican–American War.
Residents of Delray Beach volunteered to watch the beach and ocean 24 hours a day from the false bell tower atop the beachfront Seacrest Hotel during World War II. The coastline was guarded by military men on horseback. Attacks on ships can be observed from the coast. During WWII, military soldiers stationed in Delray Beach flocked to the neighboring Boca Raton Army Airfield. After the war, some servicemen who had trained at the airfield returned to Delray Beach. During the 1950s and 1960s, the city continued to expand steadily.
The core of downtown Delray used to be Atlantic Avenue, which ran from Swinton Avenue west to the Intracoastal canal east. Since then, the downtown area has grown. With I-95 on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the north-south borders were about two blocks north and south of Atlantic Avenue by 2010.
